Abstract

[New strategies for the postsurgical treatment of malignant glioma]

[Article in Italian]

Boiardi A

Malignant gliomas are known for their intrinsic heterogeneity that contributes to tumour recurrence, despite aggressive multimodality therapy.
New approaches of post surgical treatment are formulated, according to specific aspects of the biology of gliomas including angiogenesis, invasion, DNA-repair mechanisms, cell cycle regulation and apoptosis.
Efforts are also done in order to define the use of currently available cytotoxic agents by combining them with so-called biologic modalities.
Thus there has been a change in the concept of management of malignant gliomas focusing the aim in containing the tumour, rather than attempting a cure.
