Gliadel=AE Wafer demonstrates long-term survival = benefit for=20 patients with high-grade malignant glioma

MGI PHARMA, INC. (Nasdaq: MOGN) today = announced the=20 publication of long-term (56 month) follow-up data showing that = Gliadel=AE Wafer=20 provides a durable long-term survival benefit for patients with = high-grade=20 malignant glioma.=20

Gliadel Wafer is approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with=20 newly-diagnosed high-grade malignant glioma as an adjunct to surgery and = radiation. Gliadel Wafer is also indicated to treat recurrent = glioblastoma=20 multiforme (GBM) in addition to surgery. The approval was based on = clinical=20 trial results showing the median survival of patients with high-grade = malignant=20 gliomas increased to 13.9 months from 11.6 months, and the median = survival of=20 patients with recurrent GBM increased to 6.4 months from 4.6 months.=20

The newly-published data in the March edition of The European Journal = of=20 Neurosurgery, Acta Neurochirurgica, reports long-term survival results = from a=20 previously published 240-patient, randomized, multi-center, = placebo-controlled=20 study. This study demonstrated that patients treated with Gliadel Wafer = in=20 combination with radiation therapy had a significant survival advantage = at three=20 years compared with placebo (9.2% vs. 1.7%; P=3D0.01). Of the 59 = patients=20 available for long-term follow-up, 11 were alive at 56 months (4.7 = years). Of=20 those 11 patients, nine had received Gliadel Wafer and two had received = placebo=20 wafers. Two of the nine remaining patients had GBM. Treatment with = Gliadel Wafer=20 in patients with high grade malignant glioma was associated with a 27% = reduction=20 in risk of death over the study period (P=3D0.018, log-rank statistic).=20

About Gliadel=AE Wafer
Gliadel Wafer (polifeprosan 20 with = carmustine implant) is a biodegradable wafer containing the chemotherapy = agent=20 carmustine, or BCNU, and is indicated in newly diagnosed patients with=20 high-grade malignant glioma as an adjunct to surgery and radiation. = Gliadel=20 Wafer is also indicated in recurrent glioblastoma multiforme patients as = an=20 adjunct to surgery. Gliadel Wafer provides localized delivery of = chemotherapy=20 directly to the site of the tumor and is the only FDA approved brain = cancer=20 treatment capable of doing so.
