      <P>COLUMBUS , Ohio =96 Nanotechnology may one day help physicians =
detect the=20
      very earliest stages of serious diseases like cancer, a new study=20
      suggests.</P>
      <P>It would do so by improving the quality of images produced by =
one of=20
      the most common diagnostic tools used in doctors' offices =96 the =
ultrasound=20
      machine.</P>

      <P>In laboratory experiments on mice, scientists found that =
nano-sized=20
      particles injected into the animals improved the resulting images. =
This=20
      study is one of the first reports showing that ultrasound can =
detect these=20
      tiny particles when they are inside the body, said <A=20
      href=3D"http://www.vet.ohio-state.edu/ThomasRosol.htm">Thomas =
Rosol</A>, a=20
      study co-author and dean of the <A=20
      href=3D"http://www.vet.ohio-state.edu/">college of veterinary =
medicine at=20
      Ohio State University</A>.</P>
      <P>=93Given their tiny size, nobody thought it would be possible =
for=20
      ultrasound to detect nanoparticles,=94 he said.</P>
      <P>It turns out that not only can ultrasound waves sense =
nanoparticles,=20
      but the particles can brighten the resulting image. One day, those =
bright=20
      spots may indicate that a few cells in the area may be on the =
verge of=20
      mutating and growing out of control.</P>
      <P>=93The long-term goal is to use this technology to improve our =
ability to=20
      identify very early cancers and other diseases,=94 said <A=20
      href=3D"http://bmew.bme.ohio-state.edu/bmeweb3/Liu/">Jun Liu</A>, =
a study=20
      co-author and an assistant professor of <A=20
      href=3D"http://www.bme.ohio-state.edu/bmeweb3/">biomedical =
engineering at=20
      Ohio State University</A>. =93We ultimately want to identify =
disease at its=20
      cellular level, at its very earliest stage.=94</P>
      <P>The study is in the current issue of the journal <EM><A=20
      href=3D"http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/PMB">Physics in Medicine and =

      Biology</A></EM>.</P>
      <P>The researchers injected a solution of silica nanoparticles =
into the=20
      tail vein of each mouse. They then anesthetized the animals and =
placed=20
      them on their backs on a warm imaging table.</P>

            may pass through the walls of the leaky blood vessels, or=20
            capillaries, of tumor tissue and actually infiltrate the=20

      <P>Rosol said that Liu and her team are working on creating =
biodegradable=20
      nanoparticles. For the purposes of this study, however, the =
researchers=20
      wanted to use a hard substance, silica, to see if their idea would =
work.=20
      The strongest ultrasound signals are those produced by sound waves =
bounce=20
      off a hard surface. While not biodegradable, the nanoparticles =
used in the=20
      study were biologically inert.</P>
      <P>The researchers took ultrasound images of the animals' livers =
every=20
      five minutes for 90 minutes after the injection. The nanoparticles =
had=20
      accumulated in the animals' livers. Another future step for this =
work is=20
      to label nanoparticles with a molecular road map of sorts, which =
would=20
      direct the particles to go to specific locations in the body.</P>
      <P>=93The liver takes up foreign substances in the body, so it's =
not=20
      surprising that that's where we saw the particles,=94 Rosol said. =
=93But we=20
      ultimately want to be able to make these particles to go to the =
mammary=20
      glands or other tissues we're interested in.=94</P>
      <P>The ultrasound images grew brighter over the 90-minute period. =
The=20
      researchers compared these images to those from a group of control =
mice=20
      injected with a saline solution. There was no change in ultrasound =
image=20
      brightness in the control mice after that injection.</P>
      <P>While this research is still in its infancy, Rosol and his =
colleagues=20
      foresee a day when nanotechnology can alert a physician to the =
beginnings=20
      of cancer or heart disease, perhaps in a woman who =
<STRONG></STRONG>has a=20
      family history of breast cancer:</P>
      <P>=93Her doctor could inject the breast with nanoparticles and =
the=20
      resulting ultrasound image would alert the doctor to any =
suspicious areas=20
      in the tissue, even at the cellular level,=94 Rosol said.</P>
      <P>The hope is that combining ultrasound and nanotechnology may =
provide a=20
      definitive diagnosis in lieu of an invasive procedure like a =
biopsy.</P>
      <P>=93These nanoparticles may make it possible for physicians to =
screen for=20
      tumors very quickly, and perhaps lessen the need for a biopsy in =
many=20

enough to=20
      carry a payload of medicine, Rosol said.</P>
      <P>=93That the particles made it into the liver suggests that they =
could be=20
      used to deliver toxic chemotherapeutic drugs that would act =
locally on a=20
      tissue, at the site of a tumor, and not have such a pronounced =
affect on=20
      the rest of the body,=94 Rosol said. =93The problem with =
chemotherapy is that=20
      the drug affects the whole body, causing a host of problems such =
as hair=20
      loss, diarrhea and anemia.=94</P>
