Dear Supporter of the International Brain Tumour
Community,
We are now in count-down mode for the forthcoming International Brain Tumour
Awareness Week (21-27 October). As you are a key supporter of these projects we
will soon be sending you by email embargoed copies of Awareness Week media
statements in advance of their distribution so that you can utilise their
content for local publicity purposes.
Here are some recent developments:
The B.R.A.I.N. Child organisation,
based at the SickKids Hospital, Toronto, Canada, and which is a group of
parents, family and friends who have the common experience of caring for a
child with a brain tumour or who are survivors themselves, supports the World
Walk and the Awareness Week. Karen Haas advises that on Sunday 21 October they
will be holding the 5 kms Adventure Valley Walk with the combined
distance being donated to the World Walk target …
302 individuals each walked 5 kms on 29 September in a walk for the National
Brain Tumor Foundation held in San Diego (USA), resulting in 1510 kms being
added to the World Walk target …
The Brain Tumor Foundation
for Children Inc, based in Georgia, USA, supports the World Walk and the
Awareness Week and will be holding the 9th Annual William's Walk and Run just a
few days after the Awareness Week …
George Plym, President of the WNC Brain
Tumor Support group in North Carolina, and his colleagues undertook a walk
around a lake at their Survivors' Picnic on 20 September and donated 30 miles
to the Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours. The funds raised will go to the
Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of
the United States whose founders Mike and Dianne Traynor are strong
supporters of the IBTA and its work. That's a tremendous effort, considering
that a number of their supporters are unable to walk …
Nicole Dunn of the Cure for Life
Foundation in Sydney, Australia, advises that 16 fund-raising trekkers who
will be walking in Chile on behalf of the Foundation will each cover
approximately 35 kms, resulting in a donation of 560 kms to the World Walk
target and that 30 schools have signed up to participate in the “Cranes
for Brains” activity during the Awareness Week …
Dr Andrea Pace of the Irene Onlus
organisation was able to speak briefly about the Awareness Week and distribute
copies of the Italian-language version of the IBTA brochure to his colleagues
at the Italian Association of Neuro–Oncology (AINO) meeting held
recently in Lecce, Italy. Dr Eugenio Pozzati, of the Unit of Neuro-oncology,
Department of Neurosurgery, at Bellaria Hospital Bologna, Italy, has organised
a meeting on the intracavity therapy of glioblastomas on 22 October at his
hospital …
400 walkers are anticipated for the 6th Annual Orange County (USA)
Angel Adventure 5 kms Walk to be held on 20 October. Funds raised will go to
the National Brain Tumor
Foundation and the combined distance covered will be donated to the Walk
Around the World for Brain Tumours …
US singer, songwriter and brain tumour survivor David
Bailey’s visit to the UK for the Awareness Week is taking shape with
performances confirmed so far at the following locations: house concert for the
Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour
Trust, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire; concert in the chapel of the Royal
Marsden Hospital, London Borough of Sutton; concert at The Children's Trust,
Tadworth, Surrey; floor spot in the lineup at The Ram Folk Club, Claygate,
Surrey. Radio and media interviews are also being arranged …
Don't forget to let us know as soon
as possible about any Awareness Week activities you're planning. Please
donate any mileage from sponsored walks to the Walk Around the World for Brain
Tumours. And finally, please DO spread the word about the Awareness Week
and World Walk via your local newspapers, radio stations and television
programmes.
Thank you for your continuing support.
