La raucedine di Sebastiano

Le prime luci dell'alba hanno già da un pezzo inondato la stanza dove il fattore e sua moglie dormono ancora.
Sebastiano, il gallo che dovrebbe dare la sveglia ogni giorno alle 5 del mattino, oggi ha la voce rauca e a malapena si sente il suo "Chirichicchiiiii".
E’ un vecchio gallo di tutto rispetto e nessun animale del cortile osa contrastarlo perché la sua esperienza e saggezza incutono timore.
Un giovane galletto morde il freno e, in attesa di diventare il re del pollaio, si diverte tutto il giorno ad inseguire le pollastrelle più giovani, sotto lo sguardo benevolo di Sebastiano.
Il cortile è in subbuglio perché il fattore oggi tarda e le ciotole del mangime e dell’acqua sono vuote.
Quando l’uomo e sua moglie si svegliano ormai nell’aia regna la confusione totale.
"Ecco, sbotta la donna, te lo avevo detto che quel gallo è ormai vecchio e non fa più il suo dovere a puntino. Devi deciderti a mandarlo in pensione e a sostituirlo con quello lì più giovane, che passa tutto il tempo a mettere scompiglio nel cortile."
Con il volto paonazzo e le mani sui fianchi lancia occhiate di sfida al marito e a Sebastiano.
Povero Sebastiano, colpevole di essersi raffreddato per amore!
Sì per amore, perché il poveretto è già qualche notte che, invece di dormire nella stia al calduccio, s’intrattiene con un’avvenente chioccia, che lo ha stregato con i suoi modi gentili.
Passeggiano per ore ed ore al chiaro di luna, stretti stretti per sentire meno freddo.
Sebastiano le confida il suo amore con lo stesso entusiasmo e la stessa delicatezza di un giovane innamorato.
Al buio non si vedono le piume bianche che sono il segno del tempo che passa e per la chioccia innamorata il suo Sebastiano è sempre forte e coraggioso come un giovane gallo, a dispetto dell’arcigna fattrice!

Sebastian’s Croaky Voice

The first light of dawn had already flooded the room in which the farmer and his wife were still asleep.
Sebastian, the roaster who usually cried around 5am, today had a croaky voice and his cock-a-doodle-do could hardly be heard. He was an old roaster who was well respected and no other farm animal dared to confront him because his experience and wisdom made the others weary of him.
A younger roaster waiting to become king of the farm yard spent most of his day chasing younger hens under the approving eyes of Sebastian.
However this morning the farm yard was unsettled because the farmer was late to feed his animals.
When the farmer and his wife wake up, there was complete chaos amongst the farm animals…
“ I told you that roaster was to old and no good for his job any more . He must retire and be substituted by the younger roaster who spends his whole time causing havoc in the farm yard.” Said the farmers wife, her face bright red and her hands on her side’s glaring at her husband.
Poor Sebastian indeed had a cough due to being in love, the poor roaster instead of sleeping in the warmth of the hen house had spent the last few nights with a very pretty hen who had bewitched him with her kind words and tenderness. They would walk for hours and hours under the light of the moon very close to each other so as not feel the cold.
Sebastian then declared his love with the enthusiasm and tenderness of a youngster in love. In the dark the white feathers which were a sign of passing time could not be seen, and for the young hen she was in love with Sebastian who remained stronger and braver than any younger roaster no matter what the wicked farmers wife had to say.
